Tree Spirt
Another in a series of 5 carved from Aspen trees that were on our property. This was the start of the inspiration to carve the masks. It was out in the yard where I would see it often as I walked by. First and foremost I saw a bat in the roots. In Traditional Japanese Carpentry the posts and beams are almost always used and placed according to how the tree grew. Vertical pieces have an up and down, used in accordance with how the tree grew. One way to determine this is to look at the knots. More sagging, due to gravity, will be on the underside of the knot/ branch as it's growing.
Obviously, with the roots in tact, such detection is moot. This piece was to be upside down, heaven is now hell, therefore devilish. And the bat is next to the devil, deformed but still there. The face on the lower end of the mask was a spontaneous carving with the aforementioned in mind. Sinister and yet smiling, greeting you.
