New York, NY
This idea was born in a Manhattan delicatessen. I was shopping and I saw these plates made of alabaster and the idea for a sculpture came to me right away. I had a piece of alabaster at home and knew what I wanted to carve. I see the plate like formations of the sculpture as people or the souls of people all stacked on one another like they are in New York City. Some have departed, some are partially formed, and others are stacked. The blue face in the bottom holds the piece in place and is the face on all the souls, all the people of this piece.
I am very taken by furniture made in Russia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This led to the shape of the stainless steel base and the goat’s feet which are cast in bronze. The alabaster piece rests on a thick piece of glass.
