The following is a direct quote from a note I wrote after having a nighttime dream:
“Dream 10/05 Island of Hi. Rita (my wife) and I are on vacation. We go for a hike and find this bone, 4’ x 2 1/2’ x 2’ large with this face/mask carved into the bone with replica’s carved below, seemingly done by previous hikers. I was impressed with the delicate eye and mouth features.”
Also on the note is a sketch; of the bone with the faces, a detail drawing for the formation of the “delicate eye and mouth features” and a drawing of a string of islands with Hi Island being pointed out.
I used pink Cholmondeley marble from the coast of Alaska to carve this sculpture. The overall feel of the finished sculpture translates well from my dream and sketch notes, yet I deviated from the sketches I drew after the dream. The entire sculpture is a face. The eyes and mouth are replicas of the entire sculpture. The back shows a veil being raised, revealing the daytime world.
