Emissary
This is one in a series of masks carved in the spring of 2018 from Aspen wood.
I wanted an Owl behind a veil. Not the veil of a bride nor a religious veil, but a veil between the dream world and this reality. I find owl's to be harbingers of dreams and I like the rememberance of the thin veil between worlds.
I carved the horizontal waves first to create some movement, kind of like the undertone in a painting. Then I carved the vertical waves, trying to make the veil and create more movement. Finally the face features with the symbolism of the cheeks blowing dreams to you.
Just a side note, a good third of the time it takes to carve a mask, is spent on the back side, hollowing out the unseen portion.
15" x 6" x 3"
