A Place to Land
A Place to Land comes from a nighttime dream, where I am flying thru space, no aircraft, just me flying around. I was getting tired when I came across this flat rock floating in space. I notice there are square shaped depressions in the surface of the flat rock. Looking closer I see one square was proud of the surface. I knew this proud square was a place to land.
I purchased this piece of alabaster from a warehouse full of carving stones on a buying trip to Vancouver, British Colombia. As I looked through the warehouse, I came across this piece of stone. It was absolutely perfect for the dream piece. I did very little to the overall shape and size of the stone; just flattened one face then chiseled out the square depressions. The piece came out almost exactly as the drawing I did of the dream with the exception of the size. The rock in the dream was enormous by comparison with squares at least 20 feet wide with and least that much space in between each square.
29" x 24" x 11" Alabaster, Stainless Steel, Bronze
