I made this piece so a fellow practitioner of Tensegrity, an ever expanding series of physical movements introduced by Carlos Castaneda, and I could share back it and forth. Both Affection and Mold of Man represent two Tensegrity movements. We would pass the pieces back and forth, each of us keeping one or the other for a week or a month. On one such exchange, I placed one hand over the other, cupping Affection, in a protective gesture and broke it. I repaired the piece with stainless steel rods attaching the head to the neck.
To protect against future mishaps I made boxes for each piece and chased their images on the lids. The figures are carved from fluorite and the boxes are hand-made from copper. Chasing an image into metal by a series of light hammer strokes, known as repoussé, was used to create the figures on the lid of each box.
