Horned Toad
This Bowl came about as a result of shopping with my wife. As happens often enough, she came across something she liked and asked if I could make it for her. In a very gentle way she showed me a bowl she found and asked if I could make her one just like it. It was a simple bowl with a handle - all hollowed out of a single piece of wood. I told her I could make a bowl with a handle but it probably wouldn't be exactly like the one she showed me. She was fine with it.
A few weeks later on a hike in the El Malpas, a horned toad lizard crossed our path. The idea came to me to create a wooden bowl with an attached handle, carved in the likeness of a horned toad lizard.
The bowl is carved from a log of Port Orford cedar my traditional Japanese carpentry teacher gave me. I had it for 15 years before having the privilege of carving it into this horny toad bowl. The log had a large split that carried to the center of the bowl which I thought best to butterfly splice twice across the bottom.
