Hello
This was a learning piece. People often ask if there is a grain structure to stone, similar to wood. Yes, there is. Sometimes it is more striking and easier to see, like wood, and sometimes it is subtle and very difficult to read. Sometimes there are faults hidden deep in the stone and if you don’t look closely and pay attention, a larger chunk can break off with a hit of a hammer and chisel. As happened with this piece.
I had this nice piece of translucent alabaster, a very good idea of what to carve out of it, early on in its conception, early morning and just beginning to carve. One miss hit and the whole piece changes. Not a fan of glueing stone, I tried to adjust, modify my idea.
Although this piece works and is beautiful, I still believe it would have worked better before the break. And yet, I used the broken off piece to create another stone sculpture, ‘Held”, which didn’t break and I’m happy with the way it turned out.
