Mad
This is the last of five masks to be carved out of Aspen trees the had died and were on there way to the fire stove. I had a lot of hope for this one, the last one to be done, I had been carving the Aspen now for a bit, I thought I could read the grain well, it's out of a larger piece which allows the carver to show more of the heart wood and less of the sap wood. The heart wood usually has more color, a tighter grain and is more pleasant to look at. I also thought I saw the figure in the wood similar to, but which is much more prevalent in King. All which give me more freedom and confidence to carve well. I had a simple one line drawing on a "post it" note. I was inspired to flare the hair out, almost flames coming out the top, steam at least. This is the mad of anger not of a mad mind, crazy mind.
But it was the last for a reason, time was running short, the tour show was looming and feeling press I unknowingly compromised. It wasn't until a few weeks after the show that I saw the error of my ways. It took some time but I got to do the refinements that in my rush were missed. If you compare the first and last pictures of this piece, the differences are there. I developed the hair a bit and I made it so you can see the nasal passages from a front on point of view. It may seem like very little, but God is in the details. So I'm happier, yet still not sure I'm done.
