Grin of Recognition
I read a book by Bernadette Roberts called The Experience of No Self. The book had enough of an effect on me that I chipped a stone piece in memory of it. Called the Grin of Recognition for the part in the story where the author comes fully under the influence of; the person grinning at something, the something that the person is grinning at, and the grin itself are all one and the same.
The stone is alabaster and I began working the stone as I finished reading the book. The oval shape represents a woman’s face and she is wrapped in the grin. On one side is a rectangular protrusion representing a conversation I had with a friend as I was carving the stone. The conversation was a peaceful and profound one and in acknowledgment, I carved it into the piece.
