Chac-mools
Chac-mools were carved by ancient Toltec's as divine messengers who carried offerings to the Sun God.
Chac-mools were introduced to me as protectors and this is how I see this piece. It began when I needed a tree stump to support a metal smith’s anvil. I asked a home owner who had cut down several trees on his property if I could buy or have one of the stumps to support the anvil. I removed the bark from the stump in two large pieces and one small. A few weeks later a friend saw the bark pieces and told me they looked cool and I should make something out of them. I hear this type of thing regularly and just as often don’t know what to make of it. I hung them in the front of the house to see them better and began to see possible faces in the bark. When I bought this piece of marble, I thought and drew, thought some more and developed the faces from the bark to the front and the back creating the Chac-mools.
I bought the stone I used to carve this piece from a man in Bellingham who takes his boat to the Alaskan coastline and travels up stream beds loading his boat with stones. He sells them to carvers when he gets back home. He called this type of stone Inner Light marble. The base is carved from eastern hard maple. No sand paper or finish was used on the base.
