Formation of Pleasant Slumber
This piece comes from a nighttime dream. It is the first dream I had where I woke with the idea to make the object I’d seen and had been drawn to. In my dream this shape appeared. It was extremely peaceful and centering and was very large, sitting in our living room.
After working a midnight shift, I came home, very tired, and my wife put me to sleep in our bed as she left for work. I remember how lovingly she tucked me in, and gave me a kiss, which sent me off to a very pleasant slumber.
The wood is Western Maple Burl which has been treated with ferrous sulfate. Intended to bring out the character in the burl, the ferrous sulfate darkened the wood quite a bit. The finish is shellac, put on in the manner of a French Polish and there is a hollow in the bottom, plugged with cork, which houses my dream notes.
